When I told my parents I wanted to be an author when I grew up, they advised me that writing wasn't a real job and had no future. So I became a librarian, a bookseller, a literary critic, and an editor. Being of a romantic disposition, I used to read a lot of romances and bore my friends with pronouncements that I could write one with both hands tied behind my back. At that stage, I hadn't tried, of course. Well, it was harder than I thought, and my first attempts still malinger in the bottom drawer of my file cabinet along with other embarrassing legacies of the past. Howeve, I perservered until my first book was published in 1992 by Naiad Press.
Eighteen novels later, I still love writing and I love meeting readers and hearing the stories of others. People often ask me where ideas and characters come from, and I'm not really sure how to explain the magical alchemy of imagination, experience, emotion, and inspiration that drives folks like me to sit down with a pen and paper and tell a story. It's the best job I've ever had.
These days my mom says she always expected I would become a writer. She reads all my books and frequently reminds me that there is no excuse for vulgar language, and that a good romance should be romantic. Mom, sorry about the language thing, but I really try in the romance department.
